on friends

Subject: hi

sorry to hear you're feeling poorly.

in your last diary entry, you say that there are no such things as friends. but what do you mean? friendship, one might say, is an accomadation of interests, usually temporary. we applaud and even envy those who maintain a friendship over many years, because the effort to maintain friendship is often too great for the changes we all undergo. luck is also required. liking is also luck. how lucky i am to like someone, to be in the right spirit to be able to like someone. and if that person is also of a mind to like and be interested in me, then i am doubly lucky. here is a kind of harmony. but i think the harmony can go beyond this, and reach depths we scarcely imagine. this is rare, and is not in itself a recipe for permanence.

i would say more, but i've got to go and get some work done.

i hope this finds you in better spirits,

stephen
